CHAPTER 1: The Note Inside the Mattress

“I want to be honest with you,” she said.

“A forty-year-old case with a handwritten note and one photograph — that’s not nothing, but it’s not enough on its own.

If Gwen was involved in whatever happened to your family, there will be more.

There’s always more.

People who do something like this don’t do it cleanly.

Not completely.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean there are records.

Financial records, legal filings, phone logs from the time.

If she hired someone, if she paid someone, if she made a legal move against your wife before the trip — it will exist somewhere.” She finally picked up the photograph.

“And if Clara was frightened enough to hide a note inside a mattress, she may have left more than one.”

The room went quiet.

I hadn’t thought of that.

“The box,” Daniel said, looking at me.

“Did you check the bottom of the box?”
