My 12-Year-Old Son Carried His Disabled Friend So He Wouldn’t Be Left Behind — The Next Morning, I Got an Urgent Call from His School

For illustration purposes only

Wow, I was totally mistaken!

The big buses pulled into the school driveway late Saturday afternoon.

Parents were already gathered there, talking while they waited.

I spotted Kyler the moment he stepped out.

He looked… exhausted.

Mud covered his clothes.

His shirt was soaked through, and his shoulders sagged like he had carried a heavy load for hours.

His chest was still heaving!

I hurried straight to him.

“Kyler… what went wrong?” I questioned him, feeling anxious.

He looked back at me, worn out but calm, and gave a small smile.

“We refused to drop him.”

At first I didn’t understand.

Then another mother, Kendra, walked past and filled in what I had missed.

She said the route runs six miles and is not easy.

It had steep hills, uneven dirt, and narrow stretches where you have to watch every step.

That sounded like what I had pictured—until she said, “Kyler hauled Rhys on his shoulders the whole journey!”

My stomach dropped as I tried to picture it.

“Based on what my girl said, Rhys mentioned Kyler continuously repeated, ‘Grip tight, I am holding you,’” Kendra explained. “He continuously adjusted his stance and would not quit.”

I looked at my son again.

His knees were still shaking.

Then Kyler’s homeroom teacher, Mr. Yates, came over, his face tight.

“Alyssa, your boy violated the rules by walking an alternative path. It was risky! We provided direct orders. Kids who were unable to finish the hike had to stay back at the base!”

“I get it, and I apologize deeply,” I responded fast, although my fingers were beginning to shake.
