My Best Friend Spent Years Caring for My Sister with Down Syndrome – Then He Said a Few Words That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew

The man my sister loved.

“Look at me,” I said. “Rosie chose you because you make her feel safe. She needs you to believe she can come back.”

“My promise,” he whispered.

“What?”

He turned toward me.

Something desperate filled his eyes.

“I need to speak to you somewhere private.”

“This is not the time.”

“It has to be now.”

He led me into a narrow corridor near the stairwell.

The lights there were dim, and the sounds of the maternity ward became distant.

Ben leaned against the wall.

“I made Rosie a promise before they took her into surgery.”

“What promise?”

“She said that if she did not wake up, I had to tell you everything.”

My stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?”

He reached inside his jacket.

“It’s time you understood why I really married her.”

Every ugly suspicion I had buried came rushing back.

Money.

Pity.

Pressure.

A substitute for the sister he could not have.

“Do not do this,” I whispered.

Ben looked confused.

“Do not ruin three years of watching Rosie love you.”

“Cathy—”

“If you tell me this marriage was a lie while she is fighting for her life, I swear I will—”

“It wasn’t a lie.”
