My hands, still resting flat on the cold vinyl mattress, tightened against the sheets.
“A micro-pellet…?” I whispered, my voice sounding as if it were traveling through fifty feet of dark water. “Dr. Salinas… what does that implant do?”
Dr. Salinas looked down at me, her eyes filled with an unbearable, devastating gravity:
“It suppresses the production of normal chorionic hormones in the bloodstream, preventing standard home pregnancy tests from detecting a fetus… while simultaneously inducing localized vascular spasms that typically result in a ‘silent,’ unexplainable miscarriage between weeks eight and twelve.”
Dr. Salinas turned back to Diego:
“Someone has been administering a classified, black-market chemical abortifacient to your wife for the past three months.”
“And the only reason this baby is still alive…”
Dr. Salinas pointed to the strong, pulsing red ribbon of the umbilical artery:
“…is because Laura’s body encapsulated the foreign pellet in a protective layer of fibrous tissue, walling it off from the placenta and saving her child’s life.”
Diego took two stumbling steps backward. His lower back struck the steel instrument tray behind him, sending a jar of stainless-steel speculums crashing to the floor with an ear-splitting, violent *CLATTER*.
*BANG-CRASH.*
Paula turned on her heels, lunging toward the exit door—
“Stand right where you are, Ms. Vance,” a voice boomed from the doorway.

The door to the examination suite was blocked.
Standing in the frame, wearing a tailored charcoal-gray wool overcoat over an unbuttoned suit jacket, was **Special Agent Marcus Vance** of the **Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Pharmaceutical Crimes & Counter-Terrorism Task Force**.
Pinned to his left lapel was a gold, five-pointed federal star. In his left hand, he carried an unsealed, red-bordered titanium evidence briefcase stamped with the official seal of the **United States District Court for the Southern District of New York**.
Behind Marcus stood two armed federal tactical officers in midnight-blue Kevlar vests, their hands resting at low-ready on their duty holsters.
Diego’s jaw unhinged.
His eyes darted from the gold badge to the two federal agents, his breath hitching into a high, wheezing gasp:
“Marcus…?” Diego choked out, his voice cracking like dry kindling. “Marcus, what the hell is this?! You’re my cousin! Why are you bringing federal agents to my wife’s doctor’s office?!”
Marcus Vance did not look at Diego with the warmth of a family member. He looked at him with the cold, immovable detachment of an executioner reviewing a capital indictment docket.
“I am not here as your cousin, Diego,” Marcus said, his voice flat as an iron anvil. “I am here as the Lead Case Controller for **Operation Broken Cradle**.”
Marcus stepped into the room, his heavy leather dress shoes striking the linoleum with a measured, rhythmic cadence:
