For years, I ignored the small charge that appeared on our bank statement every month. It was only $87, and whenever I asked my husband about it, he always gave me the same answer: it was an old storage unit he had forgotten to cancel.

At first, I accepted that explanation.
My husband, Mark, and I had been married for almost fifteen years. We had built what I thought was a steady, ordinary life together. We shared a home, paid our bills, celebrated birthdays, and made plans for the future. There were no obvious reasons for me to question him.
Then one evening, while sorting through our monthly statements, I noticed the charge again.
“Mark?” I asked. “What is Silver Ridge Storage?”
He was standing at the kitchen counter, looking at his phone. His thumb stopped moving.
“What?”
“This charge. Eighty-seven dollars.”
He glanced at the statement.
“Oh, that’s an old storage unit,” he said. “It’s empty. I’ve just been meaning to cancel it.”
I looked at him.
“How long have you been paying for it?”
He hesitated.
“Years.”
“How many years?”
“Lena, it’s nothing. I forgot about it.”
I turned the statement around and pointed to the charge.
“You’ve been paying for an empty unit for fourteen years?”
He sighed.
