“You wrote that meeting me wasn’t an accident.”
“It wasn’t.”
My chest tightened.
“Was it a bet?”
His eyes widened.
“What?”
“Did someone dare you to ask for my number?”
“No.”
“Was somebody watching?”
“Mia, no.”
“Then why did you pretend you’d never seen me before?”
He stepped closer, but I raised my hand.
“Just tell me.”
Luke looked at the letter.
“Read the rest.”
“I want to hear it from you.”
He was silent for a moment.
Then, he sat down.
“I saw you in that bakery a few days before I spoke to you.”
I waited.
“I was there with my mother.”
Of all the answers I had imagined, that was not one of them.
“Diane?”
“Yes.”
He nodded toward the letter.
“It’s all in there.”
