“Did Tyler or those boys bother you again?”

One Tuesday I made spaghetti because it used to be his favorite. He came to the table with the hoodie sleeves pulled down over his hands, gripping the cuffs in his fists like mittens. He sat with his elbows tucked against his sides, making himself narrower than the chair.

“How was school?”

“Fine.”

He pushed the noodles around with his fork. He didn’t lift a bite.

He pushed the plate away.

“Did Tyler or those boys bother you again?”

“I’m fine, Mom.”
