The Quiet Promise Sister Esperanza Could No Longer Remember – usnews

“How could repeated procedures occur based on an old signature?”

Serrano looked ashamed.

“They should not have.”

“But they did.”

“Yes.”

“Who submitted the documents?”

“A representative claiming to act on behalf of the convent.”

Mother Caridad sat straighter.

“Name.”

“Father Esteban.”

The room became still.

Esperanza looked at Elena.

“Did you speak to him?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“After Miguel was born.”

“What did he say?”

Elena’s eyes moved toward the window.

“He said you had made a private choice and that honoring it required silence.”

Esperanza’s face tightened.

“And you believed him?”

“For a time.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew details from our first meeting. Things only a few people knew.”

“Such as?”

“The yellow dress. The wooden box. The words you wrote to me.”

Esperanza looked at Mother Caridad.

“He had access to everything.”

“Yes,” Mother Caridad said.

Elena nodded.

“But then Gabriel asked a simple question.”

“What question?”

“If Ana had chosen silence, why did the invoices keep coming to me?”

That question had changed everything.

Elena began investigating the clinic appointments. She discovered that the private clinic had received payments from a charitable fund connected to the diocese. She found no proof that Esperanza had attended any of the listed consultations.

“Then why did you make the appointment seven weeks ago?” Paloma asked.

“To force the clinic to speak with me. I used the same name, the same address, and presented the old correspondence.”

“Did they tell you another procedure had occurred?”

“No.”

Elena looked at Esperanza.

“They told me one had been scheduled.”

Esperanza’s breath caught.

“For when?”

“Eight weeks ago.”

One week before the date on the appointment card.

“But I never left the convent,” Esperanza said.

Mother Caridad remembered the night.

Esperanza had complained of dizziness after evening prayers. Sister Beatriz had taken her to the infirmary. By morning, she had seemed well.

Mother Caridad turned slowly toward Doctor Paloma.

“You were not called.”
