“Vanessa and I have a child together.”
For a moment, even the monitors seemed silent.
I blinked.
“A what?”
“A son.”
Another contraction tore through me.
I gasped, but Nathan kept talking.
“He’s thirteen months old.”
Thirteen months.
My mind immediately began doing the math.
Our fourth wedding anniversary had been six months earlier.
Which meant Nathan had not made one mistake.
He had lived an entire second life.
“You have a son?”
“Yes.”
“With her?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked down at the floor.
Nathan did not.
His eyes stayed on me.
Cold.
Prepared.
Corporate.
As if this were a negotiation.
“My parents know,” he continued. “We’ve been discussing what this means for the family.”
I felt suddenly nauseated.
“Your parents know?”
“My father found out several months ago.”
“And nobody thought I should?”
“This wasn’t the right time.”
I almost laughed.
