Rachel immediately heard something in my voice.
“What happened?”
“Nathan has a thirteen-month-old son.”
Silence.
“With Vanessa Rowe.”
Longer silence.
Then:
“I’m sorry, what?”
“He brought her to the hospital.”
“He brought his mistress into your delivery room?”
“Yes.”
Rachel swore.
“He told me our daughter won’t carry his last name, and he plans to remove her from the family inheritance structure.”
Another silence.
Then Rachel’s voice changed.
No longer my friend.
Now my attorney.
“Tell me exactly what you want.”
I looked down at my sleeping daughter.
Her hand was wrapped around my finger.
“First, I want a preservation order on every trust account I have fiduciary authority over.”
“Done.”
“Second, notify the independent trustee that there may have been undisclosed transfers involving Nathan and Vanessa.”
Rachel paused.
“You think there are?”
“I know there are.”
“How?”
“Because Nathan is lazy when he lies. Last year, he told me the Harbor Ridge apartment was being used for visiting executives. Vanessa has been living there.”
“That property belongs to a subsidiary of the family trust.”
“Exactly.”
Rachel exhaled.
“That could be self-dealing.”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
