Stop putting things in writing. Mr. Hale doesn’t like unnecessary records.

Richard Latham’s jaw moved slightly when my mother read that one aloud.

He rose. “Your Honor, we object to the relevance of casual workplace communication being portrayed as—”

Judge Warren held up one hand. “Noted. Overruled for now. Continue.”

My mother looked surprised every time the judge let her keep going, as if she expected the world to interrupt her forever.

The next exhibit was the photograph that had kept her awake for weeks.

It showed a delivery box of chicken with a torn label. The printed date was smeared, but not enough to hide it.

Use by: February 14.

The photo was taken February 20.

Mom had circled the date in red marker so many times the paper was nearly worn through.
